LMF·DESIGN
About

Engineering has never felt like work.

LMF Design + Engineering is led by Laurence Foster, a mechanical engineer who has spent his life taking things apart to understand them, then putting them back together better.

Where it started

It began with a screwdriver and very little patience. As a boy I built toy planes and submarines in the shed with my Grandad, Colin White, and the part that gripped me was always how the thing worked, and whether it could be made to work better.

The lesson landed properly at fourteen. I had saved up and bought an iPhone 3 on eBay, and I took it apart the same day it arrived. I zapped the motherboard with static in the process, had to replace it, and went straight out for an anti-static mat and wrist strap. An expensive way to learn, and the moment a hobby turned into a habit. I have been pulling apart, repairing and improving electronics and mechanical things ever since.

What that turned into

The same instinct is now a career. Fifteen years of hands-on mechanical design, and more than six leading research and development in mechanical-electrical automation, across aerospace, industrial automation, manufacturing and early-stage R&D. I know SolidWorks, Inventor and Creo well, and I have a stubborn habit of designing for how something will really be made, used and maintained.

How I work

The business is small on purpose. That means an honest client list, realistic timescales, and someone who actually remembers your project by name. Expect straight talk from me: a fair estimate rather than a flattering one, an early "that's a bad idea" if it needs saying, and a pointer to someone better if I am not the right fit.

Home in Newcastle is the base. There is an Engineering Workshop in the garage with rapid prototyping on hand, and an Engineering Office for the CAD and admin. Small footprint, real capability.
